Dental Assistant Salaries in Tennessee

Tennessee is a growing state, and much of that growth can be attributed to Music City. Nashville and its surrounding towns are booming, and this means the region needs good health and dental care more than ever. Dentists in Nashville and throughout the city are looking for qualified assistants to help their practices run safely and smoothly.

The upward trend in population in Nashville and across Tennessee helps to explain the significant demand for good dental assistants. The growth in this field is impressive at over 27 percent. Aspiring dental assistants should find more than 800 available positions every year for the next several years.

In order to become a licensed dental assistant in Tennessee, candidates must complete an accredited Dental Assisting program and pass both the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam and the DANB Infection Control (IC) Exam.

After completing a dental assisting program, candidates must pass the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam. The RHS exam tests a candidate’s knowledge of radiation safety and infection control in the dental office. In order to take the RHS exam, candidates must first submit an application to the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

After passing the RHS exam, candidates must then pass the DANB Infection Control (IC) Exam. The IC exam tests a candidate’s knowledge of infection control in the dental office. In order to take the IC exam, candidates must first submit an application to the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Although growth and demand are strong, Tennessee dental assistant salaries don’t compare favorably with many other states. The average annual salary here is nearly $3,000 less than the national average.
