Requirements

There are no obligatory training requirements for dental assistants working and performing what the state dental act considers to be basic chairside procedures, alongside a licensed dental professional, beyond the need to hold a high school diploma or equivalent. You must be at least 18 years old.

To perform expanded duties in South Dakota, you must be licensed by the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry (SDBD) as an Advanced Dental Assistant, and this level does have specific requirements. To earn this status, you must either graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program in South Dakota or elsewhere, or pass the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam or another Board-approved exam. Additionally, you must hold a current CPR certification.

There are further training requirements for Nitrous Oxide Administration, Monitor General and Moderate Sedation and Intravenous Line Administration.

To become a dental hygienist in South Dakota, you must have successfully completed a ADA CODA accredited dental hygiene school, have passed the National Board Examination and have taken the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) Examination or the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) Examination within the five years preceding application. You must also have passed the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry jurisprudence examination and hold a valid CPR certification.
