Requirements

Tennessee dental legislation defines three levels of dental assistant and the duties they may perform. They are the Practical Dental Assistant, the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) and the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions. The Dental Assisting National Board provides a summary of permitted and prohibited duties for each.

A Practical Dental Assistant is an employee of a licensed dentist who is either being trained by that dentist or is a student on a CODA-accredited dental assisting program.

An RDA is a dental assistant registered with the Tennessee Board of Dentistry. To be registered, they must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or GED, and have a current CPR certificate.

An RDA Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions is an RDA who has undergone specific training in an expanded function and has received a certificate from the Board in that function.

The expanded functions are coronal polishing, the application of sealants, the monitoring nitrous oxide, and the performance of expanded restorative and/or prosthetic functions.

To perform coronal polishing, you must have completed a Board-approved coronal polishing course, and passed the related exams.

To perform the application of sealants, you must have completed a Board-approved sealant application course or be enrolled in a CODA-accredited or Board-approved program which includes such a course.

To monitor nitrous oxide, you must have completed a Board-approved nitrous oxide monitoring course or be enrolled in a CODA-accredited or Board-approved program which includes such a course.

To perform expanded restorative and/or prosthetic functions you must have a minimum of two years of continuous, full-time employment in the past three years as an RDA and complete a Board-approved certification course.
