Requirements

The Virginia Board of Dentistry is the body responsible for the registration of dental assistants in accordance with the state’s dental practice act.

In Virginia there are two classes of Dental Assistant: Dental Assistant I (DA I) and Dental Assistant II (DA II). The duties that each class may or may not perform are summarized here.

A DA I may perform basic chairside supporting procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. There are no specific education requirements for this level of dental assistant under current Virginia regulations.

To become a DA II by examination, you must be a graduate of a CODA-accredited dental assisting program and attain DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification. You may also earn DA II status by endorsement if you qualified in another state. All applicants must attest that they have read, understood and will remain current with state dental laws and regulations.

In order to assist in the monitoring or administration of sedation you must have either undergone Basic Cardiac Life Support training or similar from a Board-approved provider, or hold a current certification as a Dental Anesthesia Assistant by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) or the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA).
