Requirements

The permissible and prohibited duties of dental assistants, as well as the requirements for each level of professional are laid out in West Virginia’s dental practice act. The registration and licensure of dental assistants and other dental professionals is the responsibility of the West Virginia Board of Dentistry.

There are no explicit training requirements for dental assistants in West Virginia for the performance of basic chairside assisting procedures. However if the dentist being assisted holds a permit for the administration of sedation or anesthesia, then the dental assistant must maintain BLS/CPR certification.

A Dental Assistant Qualified in Expanded Duties is a dental assistant certified to perform one or more expanded function as defined in the dental practice act. Specific, Board-approved training is required for each function.

To be certified to perform restorative and/or orthodontic expanded functions, you must complete a Board-approved course in the function, and gain clinical experience under a supervising dentist who then attests to your competence.

To be certified to monitor nitrous oxide administration, you must complete a Board-approved course and be certified in health care provider CPR through the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

To be certified to perform coronal polishing on children under age 21, you must fulfil two years, minimum 3,000 hours, of clinical experience in a dental office and complete Board-approved courses in restorative duties or orthodontic duties, and in coronal polishing. Additionally, you will have to gain clinical experience under a supervising dentist who will attest to your competence.

To become a dental hygienist in West Virginia, you must be a graduate of an ADA-accredited dental hygiene program, and pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam, a regional clinical exam and a jurisprudence exam.
