Stony Brook

Stony Brook University, Long Island

The school can be found on the university campus’ South Drive, just across from the Stony Brook University Hospital. 

If you can manage your time between studies and extracurricular activities, the school is close to the Student Activities Center. You can find a plethora of facilities to meet your needs; the student union, conferences, movies, concerts, and even a food court.

Program Details

Those enrolled at the Stony Brook dental assistant school in Long Island can expect to learn the following modules:

  • Oral Anatomy
  • Bio-Medical Science
  • Radiology
  • Office Management and Communication
  • Basic Behavioral Concepts

Courses are practical and lecture-based in both laboratory and clinical-based settings throughout the semester. The last two courses provide the knowledge and skills required for business and dental office processes. 

Eastern Suffolk BOCES

Eastern Suffolk BOCES is an educational co-op of 51 Long Island school districts located in Bellport. The school can be found within the Bellport Academic Center, opposite the Brookhaven Learning Center and just a 6-minute drive away from the Long Island Community Hospital. 

Program Details

Students will receive the following education across 78 hours of coursework:

  • Physiology
  • Preventive dentistry
  • Patient care practices
  • Radiology
  • Surgery assistance
  • Anesthesia
  • Employment strategies

All students are also required to participate in a 25-hour clinical experience. This allows for valuable real-world perspectives from experienced dental hygienists/instructors. CPR training is included in the tuition.

Students who finish the program are eligible for reduced tuition and hours that can be put toward a Dental Assistant license at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine.

Which is the Best Dental Assistant Program for You?

At first glance, Stony Brook looks like the better choice of dental school to complete your vocational studies. But just because Eastern Suffolk is smaller, does not mean that it’s a bad choice. 

If you’re looking for a stepping stone towards a large dental assistant school in Long Island, Eastern Suffolk might be the right choice for you. It offers a comprehensive course for a shorter period with lower fees. Stony Brook does offer much more extensive coursework, but with higher tuition.
