Prerequisites

Before being considered for the program, students must pass several prerequisite courses with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. A selection of courses must be completed that includes courses like general biology, anatomy, human physiology, microbiology, chemistry, psychology, precalculus, and sociology to ensure students are prepared for the dental hygiene program at the University of Missouri. 

Prospective students must also complete a personal interview as part of the process, and maintain a cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher to be considered.

Bachelor’s Program

UMKC offers a two-year program beginning each year in August, with a summer session. Graduates from this program will

have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice ethical patient care and follow safety provisions. They will be able to work in diverse communities, assessing patients of all ages and creating treatment plans to meet their needs.

The program involves traditional classroom work as well as a clinical and community component. A total of 120 credits of dental hygiene coursework must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher to meet the criteria for a professional degree.

Master’s Program

For those looking to take their education even further, UMKC’s Master’s Program builds off the foundation from the previous degree to ensure students can utilize the technology used in the field and demonstrate a higher level of professional standards as leaders in their communities.

Requiring 36 hours of upper-level course work focusing on research and clinical practice, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have a completed manuscript for an original research project ready for publication in addition to a completed portfolio to be handed in six weeks before graduation.
