Requirements

All dental assistants in Oklahoma are required to obtain a permit from the state Board within 30 days of taking up employment in this role. Responsibility for adequate training rests with the supervising licensed dentist.

To perform Coronal Polishing/Topical Fluoride application, apply Sealants or monitor the administration of Nitrous Oxide, a dental assistant must earn the status of Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA). To gain this status the dental assistant must complete expanded duty training in the function they wish to perform at a CODA-accredited dental assisting program.

Additionally, for Coronal Polishing/Topical Fluoride application, you must complete a minimum 14-hour Board-approved course which incorporates a clinical component. For Sealants, you will first need to attain the Coronal Polishing/Topical Fluoride permit and complete a minimum 12-hour Board-approved course which incorporates a clinical component. For Nitrous Oxide, you must complete a minimum 12-hour Board-approved course.

The Oklahoma Board of Dentistry is currently drawing up requirements for the newly created title Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Assistant.

To become a dental hygienist in Oklahoma, you must be a graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program, pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and pass the Western Regional Examining Board‘s clinical exam.
