Requirements

Texas dental legislation defines three classes of dental assistant: Dental Assistant, the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) and the Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions. The Dental Assisting National Board provides a summary of permitted and prohibited duties for each class.

A Dental Assistant may perform basic chairside assisting, as defined by the Texas dental act, without the need for specific training.

An RDA is a dental assistant registered with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). To qualify, they must have a current CPR certificate and have either completed a training indicated by the Board that includes procedures for positioning and exposing dental x-rays, infection control and jurisprudence, or have earned the DANB CDA certification and completed the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment.

A Dental Assistant Qualified to Perform Expanded Functions has to gain certificates in pit and fissure sealants, coronal polishing and nitrous oxide administration monitoring.

The pit and fissure sealants certification requires at least two years’ work as a dental assistant, completion of a basic life support course and a minimum of 8 hours of Board-approved clinical and classroom education in pit and fissure sealants.

The coronal polishing certification requires at least two years’ work as a dental assistant, and a minimum of 8 hours of Board-approved clinical and classroom education in coronal polishing, or passing the DANB Coronal Polish (CP) exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment, or graduating from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program and passing the Texas Jurisprudence Assessment.

To perform nitrous oxide administration monitoring, you must pass a Board-approved nitrous oxide monitoring course.
